GE is focusing on finished panels rather than producing the cells that go into them. They will be purchasing the solar cells that go into their panels from outside sources which will result in lay-offs.

General Electric said Thursday it would lay off 85 workers from its Glasgow solar-cell factory by June 1, as the company cuts back on manufacturing its own electric-generating cells in favor of buying from outside vendors.
